It is Back-To-School time for most people across the country, and now more than ever, parents and children alike have a level of anxiety, depression and anger like never before.   Whether you choose to keep your child at home in homeschool, virtual school, or online classes, or send your child to public or private facilities, these tips will offer up constructive ways to help you and your child have a successful and healthy school year.

Stress
With all that is going on in the world, and with major changes at home, in public, and especially at school, children could be experiencing great stress.  Each child and/or teen may express stressful events and emotions differently.

Signs of stress in a child or teen

  • Negative changes in behavior – this could be any type of negative change such as avoiding parents, showing anger, hostility, fearfulness, clinging to parent or teacher, withdrawing, complaining, expressing worries, temper tantrums
  • Change in appetite – bingeing on comfort foods, or loss of appetite
  • Feeling sick – understand that they may actually feel sick as stress can cause these reactions in the body.  Many times stress shows itself in the form of a stomach ache, or even constipation, and vomiting
  • Reluctance to go to school
  • Expressing themselves (especially teens) with words of distress, such as worried, confused, annoyed, or phrases like “No one likes me”, “This is stupid”, “Nothing is fun”, or “I am not good enough”.
  • Headache – Stress can cause tension headaches that can occur up to 3-5 times a week or everyday
  • Sleep – change in sleep – being suddenly afraid of the dark, not wanting to go to bed, unable to go to sleep, grinding of teeth at night, poor concentration caused by lack of sleep
  • Bedwetting – stress is not the only cause of bedwetting, but being overly stressed can be a trigger
  • Reverting back to baby talk
  • Tantrums or meltdowns, stubbornness, mood changes from laughing to yelling to crying.
  • Tic Disorders – brief, repeated movements of the face, arms, legs or other areas.

Ways you can help your child with stress

If your child show signs of stress or anxiety then here are some things you can do to help ease the tension.

  1. Try to discover the source of stress. Ask questions.
  2. Listen – Ease their mind; let them know they can always talk to you.
  3. Talk to their teacher, or other adult in charge to get to the “why” behind their anxiety
  4. Watch the diet; reduce sugar, junk and processed foods, eat foods rich in Phyto-nutrients (vegetables, fruits)
  5. Consider gut work; fermented foods, bone broth, probiotics
  6. Heat therapy does wonders to help calm and relax the child – hot washcloth, warm bath, sauna
  7. Some supplements that may help calm the nerves: magnesium citrate (especially at bedtime). I like CALM – found at most health food stores. Multi-vitamins to insure they are getting daily nutrients
  8. If the above tips don’t help, consider further testing to check for mineral/nutrient deficiencies, leaky gut, parasites, heavy metal toxicity, food sensitivities.

If you want to help your child resolve stress and anxiety, then you might consider further testing.  My area of expertise is mineral imbalance and nutrient deficiencies.  You child’s anxiety and behavioral changes could be a result of something as simple (if I may use this word) as checking their levels and correcting an imbalance of their minerals and nutrient levels to help them feel better.
